Caros audiophiles, after lots of recent nostalgia it is time to propose a relatively new performer, the English singer/songwriter Adele.
First appearing in 2008, aged 19, with an album 19, she was championed by critics and by the public. An antidote to reality tv pop. Her voice was compared to Duffy. Although she did not have Duffy's marketable pop look, both had immediate success. To me, Duffy has the voice of a strangled cat, and "mercy"-fully her success has recently proved ephemeral.
Adele has a richer more soulful voice, with more personality. Less hardcore and vivacious than Amy Whitehouse. And truthfully, her lyrics, so far, do not have Amy W's painfully raw honesty and wicked sense of humour. Adele does not try to be a "pop"-star. It is all about the music. It is her down-to-earth charm and her powerful voice that appeals. She reminds me of Alison Moyet from the 1980s.
Now Adele, aged 21, has released her second CD 21, and suddenly the slow burn of her popularity has ignited, exploded. Currently number 1 in the USA and UK, and many other countries, she is everywhere, riding the crest of a wave. She deserves her success.

True! She deserves her success! Because she is great. But so are some of the "strangled cat's" songs, namely, Mercy or Warwick Avenue. At least to me. Didn't know you liked Alison Moyet. I remember liking her strong, powerful, sensuous voice from the 80's when I lived next to the Kings Rd and all the punks were around! But nothing compares to Amy W. Pure, raw, authentic, primitive ... absolutely love her! Great description of artists, P! As usual! Bjs. pcp
ResponderEliminarPhilip,
ResponderEliminarAcho que Adele tem uma personalidade muito forte e cria as suas próprias regras. Gostamos porque tem qualidade e é diferente, não é? Como o Philip disse «Adele does not try to be a "pop"-star. It is all about the music. It is her down-to-earth charm and her powerful voice that appeals.»
Ah, at last something different:) Sweet fifthes…
Thanks for your comments, pcp e ml. Yes, Mercy was quite good, and i liked Distant Dreamer, but otherwise... Primitive is a good description of Amy. PO
