Caros Audiophiles, apologies to younger readers, but I wish to commemorate the chocolatey velvet smooth voice of recently departed Andy Williams. Together with Tony Bennett he was pehaps the last of a golden age of easy listening crooners. Indeed he was known sometimes as Mr Easy Listening. In my eyes, and to my ears, this is not an insult. To sound 'easy' takes a lot of hard practice. Like Fred Astaire dancing. The man had class and he had style, even if his hugely popular TV shows in the 1960s and 70s were cheesy and camp.
He is best known for Moon River, even though his version, which is also the best known, was not used in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's and was never a pop hit for him. But he had many famous pop hits. My personal favourite remains Solitaire - although why a 12-year-old boy should gravitate towards a song about a lonely man lacking the self-confidence to tell a girl his true feelings, I don't know! It seems too depressing to present to you here, but check it out because it's a fantastic song.
Finally, this is the song that ended every TV show, and the sentiments in the lyric seem a fitting way to honour the man:
