A versão é, parece-me, a original, e a gravação, em estúdio.
Irra!

Obrigada JdC. pcp

Hi Joao, it's one of his best songs, juxtaposing the romantic passion of love and desperation of love lost. I was not familiar with his original lyric, with its last line about being the shadow of his lover's dog. This image is much more poignant than in the English lyric ["I'd have been your shadow if I thought it might have kept me here by your side"], but "If You Go Away" has some good phrases: "But if you stay, I'll sail on your smile, i'll ride on your touch, I'll talk to your eyes that I love so much...But if you go, I won't cry, though the good is gone from the word good-bye...If you go away, as I know you must, there will be nothing left in this world to trust. Just an empty room, full of empty space, like the empty look I see on your face."... Thanks for a moving choice. PO

Muito obrigado pelos comentários.
Hi Philip. I am curious now to listen to Brel songs in English. Maybe it is a whole new world. Thanks for your input.

Hi Joao, I heard recently a good English version by the impeccable Dusty Springfield (except her final "please don't go" which to me sounded unnecessarily pathetic). There was a big hit version in the 70s by Terry Jacks (he also had a mega hit with Seasons In The Sun/Le Moribond), and Scott Walker of the Walker Brothers has interpreted many Brel songs. One of my favourites is David Bowie's interpretation of Amsterdam...However, if you are an admirer of Brel's original lyrics, you might find that many English translations lose much of Brel's poetic imagery and cynicism...
Best wishes, PO
