Caros audiophiles, this week I have chosen one of my favourite 'pop' songs created for the Christmas season. It is almost an anti-Christmas song because the lyric recalls first the wonder and amazement of a young child's perspective but then follows the wiser child's discovery that everything does not happen according to scripture, is not really what we were told, that it does not always snow, that Father Christmas is only a disguise, that there is not peace on earth.
And yet there still remains the sentiment that despite the disappointments and realities this is a time for optimism and hope , a time to wish peace and harmony and good things for everyone.
I remember something Peter Ustinov, a great actor and raconteur and UNICEF ambassador, once said: an optimist instinctively always knew exactly how sad the world can be, but the pessimist discovers this and consequently feels this every day. Pessimism is an outdated romantic indulgence which we can no longer afford. There is so much that can go wrong, so optimism is the only possible way forward, it is an obligation.
I wish you all a hopeful Christmas, a brave New Year, may all anguish pain and sadness leave your heart and let your road be clear.
