Caros audiophiles, I thought it would be a good idea to begin this new year, this new decade, with a new group.
They are called Mumford & Sons and they come from my area of south-west London. Even so, musically their sound reflects a love of Irish-American country folk, with a little bit of bluegrass, and even a bit of Coldplay piano. Their vocal harmonies make me think of Fleet Foxes. their impassioned and joyfully exuberant playing reminds me very much of the Canadian group Arcade Fire who. I should not have been surprised to learn, share the same studio producer.
Mumford already have in their short history a fast growing band of admirers and I am certain that in 2010 these gentlemen of the road will become the darlings of summer festivals everywhere. Excitement in your limbs, romance in your heart, some fire in your belly. What more can you wish for? Maybe a beer in your hand.
It is a hard choice which song to introduce, a task made easier because there are not yet many good sound quality videos available to accompany them. And so, because the weather has been so awful here, and in Portugal too, I choose a song with an appropriate title, Winter Winds, which happens also to reference my home city.
But I urge you to check also other songs such as Little Lion Man (official video), The Cave, White Blank Page and Dustbowl Dance (from the Bookshop Sessions) and Gentlemen Of The Road which is a charming short self-introduction by the band.

Dear P, you keep saying that I like everything you post!.. well, actually this is not at all my type of music, sorry to say.... I don't particularly appreciate this type of Irish/Scottish-folk music ... but I love the energy of the video, the lovely soft colours of winter (beautiful grass and light!) and your delicious text. I can't say I listened to the lyrics all that well, but, as the vast majority of songs worldwide, it seems to me it talks about this universal concern: LOVE! And there's a positive vibrancy about it, which is great. Nice post, nice guess (I bet you are right when you say they are going to be darlings of summer festivals) and great text. Thanks, P. not an easy one this one: it's not the 'oh so pretty' video clip that everyone likes. But, i loved it because 1) it's about love throughout our lives - difficult, right? 'Your head / your heart' 2) can you imagine that i've heard someone saying a couple of days ago - «You'll do that, as I'm asking you to, you know why? Because when you die you will take your shoes on only if someone puts them on. So you'll take good care of this person, as I'm asking you to.»
For me this clip is about our most legacy in this world: what we were able to do for The Other Person while passing by. And the balance with joy & happiness that we should pursue.
Dear pcp, actually I wasn't sure the first time I heard Mumford but now I cannot listen enough. So maybe you need to give them more time? Imagine them playing to you in the Troubadour, or the Coliseu. Like you, I generally relate more to music and rhythm than a lyric. Maybe i should have posted the lyrics also, as i sometimes do. "This time no. This time no". The ensemble wants to convey the message that we're 'just passengers in here' which is not smtg we all want to hear.
IMVHO this is a video that is 'visionary', in the sense that it may not be very appreciated now, but it will be in the near future.
