Deixa-me rir...

Caros audiophiles, here is a new artist for a new year.

Michael Kiwanuka has been voted by the BBC as the most promising new British artist expected to have success in 2012.

His sound, in truth, is nothing new. It is retro 60s/70s folky soul, and his musical influences are obvious, recalling Richie Havens at Woodstock, early Van Morrison in his Astral Weeks/Moondanceperiod, and Labi Siffre [It Must Be Love, Crying Laughing Loving Lying].

But listen to his voice and he is, as the music media has noted, the reincarnation of Bill Withers [Lean On Me, Ain't No Sunshine, Use Me].

These wonderful comparisons are giving him a lot of favourable attention. He deserves them. But I suspect that he might not survive too long by just being 'the next Bill Withers'. He will need to find his own identity and musical originality.

But for now, taste and enjoy his soulful brand of easy listening nostalgia, comforting like chocolate for the ears.

A proxima.

I love the expression "comfort like chocolate for the ears" ... yes, he is everything you say, though I don't know enough about musicians to compare him to the names you mentioned. But he is refreshing, he is soft, mellow, comforting and you wish you could be listening to him holding hands with someone at some dark, smoky gig in London, for instance... thanks, P. I love the way you introduce us to new names in the musical panorama. pcp
